Charlotte in 5 Pictures

February will mark SEVEN years since I moved to Charlotte for the second time! I can't believe how fast that has gone by. This city continues to grow on me. There are certain things I'll probably always have my reservations about, but I'd feel that way about any place I live. It's easy and cheap to live here, we get all four seasons (five if you count crappy snowy February, bleh), the city is big and there is always something to do, I feel connected, and I dig the variety of people and landscapes (I could live in a country setting in Charlotte just miles from Uptown. Yes please).

Honorable mention: We live on the border of SC so we can get unbelievably cheap gas.
Dishonorable mention: This is my own personal opinion, but I do not like anything outside of the Charlotte city limits. The suburbs are sprawl-like and congested and uh, sadly both my husband and I feel very uncomfortable anywhere but in Charlotte and a couple little towns that hug to the south of the city. Again these are our own opinions from our own experiences mmmkaythanks.

An Ode to Vickie Miner

Reality Bites: Vicki Miner by dandelionapril on Polyvore

The reasons why I love Vicki Miner (Janeane Garofalo) in Reality Bites are simple: she’s a good friend, she’s quirky AND quippy, she gives it to you straight, she’s not afraid to be herself (i.e. work at the Gap, have the raddest bedroom, sing loudly in the car, dance in the gas station, etc) and yet she’s still a responsible person who exhibits genuine emotions (HELLO AIDS TEST). Also, her style, I die.

Vulture gave the ultimate ode to her last year and it's worth the read.

Thing I Remember #1: 2008

Chill out bruh, it's just MySpace. 2008

I'm highly nostalgic and I like lists. Let's combine the two. Welcome to the first installment of Things I Remember. I would have used a better picture but I got a new computer and this was literally, LITERALLY the only picture I could find in a pile of old emails I sent myself as record.

5 Favorites from the Hello Urbanist Shop

After YEARS of inactivity, I started adding items to my online shop. I changed the name from the much-beloved Cosmic Ephemera to Hello Urbanist, to go with what I do. I'm trying to get through what I already have packaged from Vintage Charlotte shows, but I have plans to add a lot of curated collections and I'm excited for the future of the shop!

January

It's cold. It's rainy. Hi, it's January. Today was actually bright and warm so a girlfriend and I walked 7 miles on the greenway through the city. But every other day seems to have looked like the above. And despite the ick of the outside, January has actually brought some delightful news. I'll be teaching at the Charlotte Art League! Just a few workshops here and there and then when the child starts Kindergarten in the fall, I'll be able to take on a heavier load. Also I started the etsy shop back up, so check that out pleaseandthankyou!

So very excited!

Hey guys! I'm so very excited to be hosting my first overnight art retreat! We have art journaling workshops, yoga, meditation and more lined up for the very last Friday and Saturday in May. Thanks to the generosity of the two woman leading the yoga and meditation, I've been able to offer scholarships and discounts.

It's been over a year since I hosted my last workshop, so I'm going to be spending the next couple weeks brushing up on new techniques to share. All materials, supplies, and meals will be provided--guests just need to bring their own tent and sleeping arrangements! Space is limited, so I encourage you to register asap!
